Monterey Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: How Long Does it Take for a Dead Rat to Start Smelling, and Then Stop Smelling

No one wants to live in a house that smells like a dead Monterey rat. However, there are some instances when we will find ourselves in this situation. The initial solution is to trace the scent to find the source of that unbearable smell. You will look for some sign of a dead rat such as trails of flies and ants. You will look at the hard-to-reach areas of your house. Unfortunately, there may come a time that you won’t be able to find the dead rat and you will have to tolerate the scent.

How Long Will It Take for the Rat to Smell
In as little as 10 minutes after the death of the rat, the body will enter the initial phase of decomposition. This process will last for at least 3 days. After this, the enzyme and the bacteria will start to break down the body of the rat. Their pancreas will enter a state of decomposition on their own due to the number of bacteria found in this organ. While these living organisms are moving through the internal organs, the color of the rat will start to change. Some people will not be able to discern the difference in color but they will be able to determine the decaying scent.

The decaying scent is a gas produced by the bacteria. Apart from the terrible stench, the body of the Monterey rat will bloat. Its eyes will start to bulge out from its socket and its tongue will protrude and swell. With regards to the decaying human body, the pressure that the gas created during this stage will be enough to expel the baby out of her womb. This is the process known to human as coffin birth. After only a week, their skin will blister. With a slight touch, the hair will fall off. After a month, the remaining hair and teeth will also fall out.

How Long Will It Take For the Smell to Disappear
There are certain instances when the California homeowner will choose to wait until the scent of the rat dissipates on its own. This is the case when the carcass is found in the rafter or in the void of our walls. The time that it will take for the body to completely decompose will be contingent upon various factors. This may include the temperature, size, humidity and the biological activity in that place. On the average, the smell that they release will last for at least 3-5 weeks.

Of course, you don’t have to live in a house that smells like a decaying flesh for 3-5 weeks. There are ways on how you can get rid of that suffocating odor. The most viable option is to seek the assistance of the experts. Once they eliminate the dead rat, the decaying scent can linger for weeks. In order to expedite the dissipation of the scent, having natural ventilation would be necessary. The professionals can also use disinfectants and deodorizers to purge the smell.
