There are different types of Monterey squirrels found in North America. Some of the more popular types would be the striped, black, flying, grey, ground, and the red squirrels. Squirrels love to eat various things, they are not picky eaters. For those who are aware about the eating habits of this wildlife creature, they are probably familiar with the voracious appetite of the squirrel. Squirrels that live in the urban settings have developed fondness toward foods that they don’t usually eat such as cereals and snacks.
The List of Food that Squirrels Often Eat
The squirrels will eat their food with full enthusiasm. For those who have a fruit-bearing tree in their property, you have possibly noticed the squirrels that are happily eating the fruits. They are agile that allows them to easily climb trees and snatch the goodies. They prefer to eat fruits such as citrus, mangoes, figs, nectarines, plums, peaches, apples, and avocados. They also love to gnaw on berries, cantaloupe, watermelons, and cherries.
Vegetables
Squirrels will drool on the sight of any vegetables. Most gardeners are aware on this fact. They will attack the gardens that are filled with leafy and green vegetables such as arugula, spinach, kale, bok choy, and lettuce. Squirrels will also chow down other vegetables such as leeks, cauliflower, broccoli, asparagus, cabbage, carrots, okra, tomatoes, and any other vegetables that they will come across. This is the reason why no one wants a squirrel near their vegetable garden
Cereals
Those who live in the country or urban areas and adore the sight of the California squirrels will often feed these small creatures with cereals. They will quickly devour corn flakes, shredded wheat, Cheerios, and all types of tasty snacks. Monterey squirrels probably love the taste of the cereals due to the high sugar content. This gives the animal the energy to find more foods. Normally, sugary foods are not included in their usual diet. Nonetheless, this creature will not care too much about the things that it will place on its food stash.
Cheese
In the wilds, it would be close to impossible for a squirrel to stumble upon cheese. In the densely-populated areas, it will not be uncommon for the humans to throw their leftovers in their garbage bin. Over the years, it has developed its love towards cheese. They will not be picky on the type of cheese that they will eat. The cheese will be a good source of extra fat that they can store in their body during the winter season.
Nuts
In case you found a nut tree in your community, there is a high probability that there is a squirrel dwelling in that tree. Finding ways to deter them from hoarding all the nuts can be a struggle. You may wrap a metal sheet around the tree that will prevent the creatures from climbing the tree. On the contrary, this can also be a positive thing. Squirrels have a habit of burying the nuts that contributes to the reproduction of trees.
After reading this article, you are probably wondering if there are any foods that they do not eat. Actually, squirrels do not like the taste of raw garlic and onions. They also hate the taste of spicy food such a hot pepper and jalapenos. This is why some people use this ingredient in concocting homemade repellents.
